Netscape became the first company to capitalise on it with founders Jim Clark and Marc Andreessen seen as revolutionaries. When the world wide web was opened to the public in 1991, it changed the world. Netscape ended up disbanded, but it did leave a legacy behind. However, the company failed to live up to expectations and despite a stellar IPO, failed to compete with the likes of Microsoft. Netscape was probably one of the most important companies of its time and if you had access to a computer and the web in the early 90s, chances are you were using a Netscape browser.

Tabbed browsing lets you have multiple web pages open in one window.In 1994, a press release read: “Netscape Communications Corporation today announced that it is offering its newly introduced Netscape(TM) network navigator free to users via the Internet.” That was when Netscape released its first commercial browser for free. The revolutionary new Netscape Browser 8 provides more security options, streamlines more standard browsing tasks and arms internet users with more timesaving solutions to their browsing needs than any other browser. Today we offer integrations of intuitive digital tools, innovative attractions and infinite media content. Netscape began by trying to make an Internet that users found easy to use. The browser even includes a link to both Firefox and Flock. However I felt it all looked a little cluttered, especially when you can open pages in multiple tabs instead.Įnding support for Netscape essentially means this version will slowly turn into a museum piece.

It essentially shows websites in simple text, in case there's some pages you just want to browse through quickly. The mini browser, on the other hand, seems a bit out of place. I found this quite useful for things I didn't really wanted to bookmark but still wanted to store somewhere. I quite like the link pad, which lets you drag and drop any link in the sidebar.

Two features that Netscape offers that you won't find in Firefox though are the link pad and mini browser. Netscape also has a number of similar security features like master password and SSL and TLS encryption. In terms of performance, you can also expect identical speed and memory usage as Firefox.
